September – Classical Music Month: SAMVAAD Connect’s Dedication to Music and Mental Well-being

September carries a special rhythm for the world. Globally, it is recognized as Classical Music Month, a time to honor the heritage of music, its masters, and its timeless ability to touch human emotions. For centuries, classical music has been more than art; it has been therapy, helping people find calm, balance, and inner strength.
At SAMVAAD Connect, we are proud to dedicate this September to the music industry and the healing power of music, beginning our journey in none other than Gwalior – the Music City of India. Known as the birthplace of Hindustani classical music and home to the legendary Tansen and the Gwalior Gharana, this city embodies the essence of what Classical Music Month stands for, tradition, innovation, and soulful healing. Gwalior is also the birthplace of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, a revered leader, statesman, and poet. This dual legacy of cultural and political heritage makes the city all the more special.
Why Music Matters for Mental Health
In an age of increasing stress, burnout, and digital noise, music has emerged as one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for mental well-being. Research shows that listening to music can:
- Reduce stress and anxiety levels
- Improve focus and concentration
- Regulate mood and emotional balance
- Enhance memory and cognitive skills
- Create a sense of connection and community
In fact, ragas in Indian classical music are specifically designed to align with the time of day and human emotions, making them a natural therapy for the mind and spirit. What makes this connection even more profound is that the effects are universal—music heals across languages, cultures, and boundaries.
SAMVAAD Connect’s September Dedication
This September, SAMVAAD Connect is weaving together music, mental health, and cultural heritage through a month-long celebration. Our series will feature musicians, gurus, classical dancers, singers, and composers who are not just performers but also carriers of healing traditions.
We begin with a special conversation featuring Dr. Sunil Pavgi ji, award-winning classical guitarist and recipient of the prestigious Shikhar Samman 2023. His journey is deeply rooted in Gwalior’s tradition while bringing a modern innovation that resonates with today’s audiences. Adding more meaning to our beginning, Dr. Pawgi is also the Guru of our curator Dheeraj Tewari, symbolizing how SAMVAAD is not only about dialogues but also about carrying forward the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition).
Connecting Music and Mental Well-being
Music is not only a source of entertainment; it is medicine for the soul. Through Music Month @ SAMVAAD Connect, we aim to highlight:
- Therapeutic Role of Music: How ragas and rhythms are used for relaxation, healing, and emotional balance.
- Stories of Musicians: Conversations with artists who carry forward legacies while adapting to modern contexts.
- Bridging Tradition and Innovation: Exploring how classical music and contemporary forms together serve mental well-being.
- Community and Healing: Music as a universal language that creates bonds, reduces isolation, and uplifts society.
In doing so, SAMVAAD Connect will create a unique dialogue—between music and emotions, tradition and innovation, therapy and art.
Global and Local Resonance
By aligning SAMVAAD Music Month with Global Classical Music Month, we are making this celebration not just about Indian heritage but about a universal language of healing. From Gwalior’s gharanas to the world’s great classical traditions, this September is about recognizing how deeply music influences mental wellness.

At the same time, this is also a tribute to India’s musical icons, from Tansen to Bhupen Hazarika, whose centenary begins this month, 8 September. Their art continues to inspire resilience, social connection, and emotional strength, values that resonate deeply with SAMVAAD’s mission.
We also look forward to supporting iconic festivals like the Chaturprahar Festival – a celebration of India’s classical ragas across the day, and the Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh – where indie sounds meet nature. Together, they represent the vast spectrum of music as both heritage and healing.
